Castle Gresley's history originated with the Gresley Family. Two parcels of land were given to two brothers. One had a church, the other had a wooden castle, hence Church Gresley and Castle Gresley.
Unfortunately, nothing remains of the wooden castle but you can still walk up Castle Knob which can be found between Knob Fields and Mount Road. The views are quite spectacular and you can view the River Trent to the north and the River Mease to the South. There is even an old Cold War nuclear bunker, although its now sealed, so you can't go in!
We also have White Lady Springs, off The Scotts. It has naturally occurring springs with a brook that runs through it. In the 1800's/early 1900's a wall was built to form a deep reservoir and the water was used by a local brewery where Toons Furnishings is now sited. Whilst remnants of the wall remain, sadly, the reservoir doesn't. It was a beautiful example of Victorian engineering and use to be used by locals to swim in, but had to be filled in for safety reasons a number of years ago.
It is thought the name came about due to the drowning of a local lady in 1925 and it is reputed to be haunted by a lady dressed in white, however it was referred to as White Lady Springs in the late 1800's and possibly has a connection with what was Gresley Abbey. Have you seen the White Lady? Let us know if you have!
This area was taken on by the Parish Council several years ago and left to nature with a bit of help from us every now and again. We have bird feeders and bat boxes to promote native species and picnic tables in the small open area at the centre. It can be walked around and enjoyed at any time of the year and is probably the most tranquil area we have in the village. If you want to escape and get back to nature, take a walk down there and look out for the wooden animal sculptures!
