We are the local authority for the Parish of Castle Gresley made up of eight volunteer Councillors and our Clerk who is also the Responsible Financial Officer.
Castle Gresley has had a Parish Council since 1894. Our Parish extends from the border of Overseal on the A444 down to just past Cadley Lane on the border of Stanton. The Parish also includes parts of the Castleton Park and Manorfields Estates.
Not only do we look after the village and its residents, we also manage some of the green spaces and a number of public footpaths and bridleways within the parish including Mount Pleasant Recreation Ground, White Lady Springs Nature Reserve, part of the National Forest at Tunnel Woods and between Foxley Woods and Waterfallows Farm.
Councillors are elected by members of the public or 'co-opted' by other councillors at a full meeting.
We are approachable, pro-active and reactive to matters within the village and work on your behalf on the things that matter most to you
A parish council is a local authority that makes decisions on behalf of people within the parish. It is the level of government that is closest to the community it serves and usually works with the local town, district or borough authority.
As it is the authority closest to the community it serves, parish council's are invariably the first place people will go to with concerns or ideas and for this reason, they are a vital part of any community.
Parish Councils make all kinds of decisions on issues that affect the local community. The most common matters that we deal with are planning matters (we are statutory consultees), crime prevention and liaison with local policing teams, managing and maintaining open spaces and campaigning for and delivering better services and facilities within the parish.
On their own, parish councils have limited powers to make decisions, but they do have the ability to negotiate with and the power to lobby other organisations that do make final decisions on matters.
In this respect, parish councils are extremely powerful. The organisations that make the final decisions know that a parish council gives the best reflection of how a community feels about matters and its views have to be taken seriously.
Parish Councils have a wide range of powers which essentially relate to local matters. This could be looking after community buildings, open space, land management, allotments, play areas, street lighting, bus shelters, car parks to name but a few.
The council also has the power to raise money through taxation. This is known as the precept. The precept is the parish council's share of the council tax bill. the precept demand goes to the billing authority who then collect the tax for the parish council.
We are a group of eight volunteers who live or work in your community.
We are chosen by you and we work for and on behalf of you.
We are your thoughts, your voice and can only work if we have the support of YOU!
